Starry Night- Tucson Style!

In Kindergarten, we learned about Vincent (or Vinny, as we call him) VanGogh. We learned about his life and struggles, as well as his shift from dark, sad colors to brighter, happier colors. We looked at Starry Night in depth, noting all of the elements that we saw.

We talked about why he would entitle this painting Starry Night, and what evidence we saw to support that. We talked about the stars, moon, blue colors and the lights on in the tiny little houses. We also noticed that he liked to use thick paint and small dashes of colors.

For this project, we took our inspiration from Vinny, but decided to show a Starry Night- in Tucson! We began with oil pastels and liquid water colors, focusing on adding elements that reminded us of VanGogh's painting. For the foreground, we looked at pictures of the desert and the Tucson skyline at night, and decided to add silhouettes of mountains, saguaros, houses and tall buildings.

I love these! Some students added other things they have found in the desert- such as cactus flowers, scorpions and rattlesnakes. Enjoy!
