Space.... The Final Frontier

In 2nd grade, we have been learning about the Elements of Art... specifically the element of Space. We learned that in art there are two types of space: Positive (the main object) and negative (the area surrounding the main object.) We looked at many different examples of both positive and negative space:

To see the presentation we talked about to introduce and review Positive and Negative Space, please go to the MEDIA page here, and see Positve and Negative Space.

2nd graders created a checkerboard design using two different colors of square paper. They cut out organic shapes from one side of the paper and flipped the cutout over an axis (like opening a book) so that the positive shape (the cutout) became the negative shape in the space next to the square. This was a challenging project for the kiddos, but once they began to recognize the patterns they were creating, all of them were successful! I love projects that are both a little challenging and encourage kiddos to problem solve! These are fantastic!
